Governing Smer Consolidates Lead in Slovakia

September 28, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) party continues to dominate Slovakia’s political scene, according to a poll by UVVM. 46.5 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing Smer in the next legislative election, up 1.6 points since August.

The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) is second with 11.8 per cent, followed by the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 11 per cent, the People’s Party - Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS) with 10.6 per cent, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 8.4 per cent, and the Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK) with 6.7 per cent. Support is lower for the Slovak Communist Party (KSS), the Movement for Democracy (HZD), the Free Forum (SF), and the New Civic Alliance (ANO).

Slovak voters renewed their legislative branch in June 2006. Final results placed Smer—led by Fico—as the top party in the European country with 50 seats. In July, Fico officially took over as prime minister, in a coalition encompassing Smer, the SNS and the LS-HZDS.

On Sept. 24, Fico assured that economic inflation in Slovakia is under control, claiming that the country’s rate currently ranks as the ninth lowest in the euro-zone, and adding, "The expectations of many fault-finders who said that the euro before and directly following its introduction will mean increasing prices have not been confirmed."
