Dutch Governing CDA Has Comfortable Lead
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Netherland’s Christian-Democratic Appeal (CDA) continues to have strong popular support, according to a poll by Maurice de Hond. A prospective tally of the results of the next election shows that the ruling party would win 33 seats in the national legislature, unchanged since mid-August.
The Socialist Party (SP) is second with 19 mandates, followed by the Proud of the Netherlands (ToN) movement, the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and the Labour Party (PvdA) all with 17 seats, the Democrats 66 (D66) with 14 mandates, and the Party for Freedom (PvdV) also with 14 seats. Support is lower for the Green Left (GL), the Christian Union (CU), the Party for the Animals (PvdD), and the Reformed Political Party (SGP).
Dutch voters renewed the Second Chamber in November 2006. The governing CDA led by current minister president Jan Peter Balkenende secured 41 out of 150 seats. In February 2007, a coalition encompassing the CDA, the PvdA of Wouter Bos, and the CU of Andre Rouvouet was assembled.
On Aug. 22, Balkenende announced he would cancel a planned increase of the general Value Added Tax (VAT) by one point to 20 per cent next year. The minister president explained the decision, calling it an "opening move to prevent economic development taking an unnecessary turn for the worse."
