Only 26% Approve of García in Peru
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for Peruvian president Alan García has continued to dwindle, according to a poll by Ipsos, Apoyo, Opinión y Mercado published in El Comercio. 26 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s performance, down four points since June. Seven-in-ten disapprove of García’s work.
In June 2006, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA)—won Peru’s presidential election in a run-off against nationalist Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). In July, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru’s head of state from 1985 to 1990, when he oversaw a major economic crisis.
Earlier this month, Humala called on unions to stage a national strike to protest hiking oil and food prices. On Jul. 10, García said Humala’s actions are part of a major plot by left-wing parties to oust him, saying, "What we are seeing is a conspiracy that is underway. (...) They want to attack the democratic system, and take power by force."
