Salvadoran President Saca Gets Better Grades
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More people in El Salvador are content with the performance of Antonio Saca, according to a poll by Consulta Mitofsky released by TCS. 61.4 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s job, up 2.8 points since February.
Saca—a media businessman—was elected in March 2004 as the candidate for the ruling conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), garnering 57.73 per cent of the vote. ARENA candidates have won the last four presidential elections in the Central American country. Saca is ineligible for a consecutive term in office.
On Jul. 4, Saca said the rising cost of food in El Salvador is related to the high cost of fuel, saying, "What happens is that oil is up, and when oil is up, everything is up." The president also warned farmers and distributors against keeping fresh grains for themselves in order to push prices even further up, declaring, "If you are watching me, know that we will go as far as possible to get you, and we have the legal tools to put you in jail."
