(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Grenada’s governing party is the most popular political organization in the country, according to a poll by the Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES). 36.4 per cent of respondents would vote for the New National Party (NNP) in the next general election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is second with 32.3 per cent, followed by the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) with 1.1 per cent, and the People Labour Movement (PLM) with 0.8 per cent.

Final results of the 2003 ballot narrowly gave the NNP’s Keith Mitchell a third term as prime minister. The NNP captured eight seats in the legislature, with the liberal opposition NDC winning the remaining seven.

On Jun. 25, the NNP launched its electoral manifesto, which includes a pledge to create 4,000 new jobs in the next five years, and predicts an economic growth of 4.0 per cent. Mitchell declared: "Our manifesto is not replete with unattainable promise. This is a contract, and we take contracts seriously."

The next general election in Grenada is scheduled for Jul. 8.
