Majority in Texas Backs McCain in 2008
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain could carry the Lone Star State in the 2008 United States presidential election, according to a poll by Research 2000. At least 52 per cent of respondents in Texas would vote for the Arizona senator in head-to-head contests against two prospective Democratic rivals.
McCain holds a 15-point lead over New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and a 13-point advantage over Illinois senator Barack Obama.
In 2004, Republican George W. Bush—a former governor of Texas—carried the state’s 34 electoral votes, with 61 per cent of the vote. No Democrat has won the Lone Star State since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
