Fernández Win Possible in Dominican Republic
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Dominican president Leonel Fernández heads to tomorrow’s presidential election in the Caribbean country as the favourite, according to a poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research published in Diario Libre. 55 per cent of respondents would vote for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate.
Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) is second with 37 per cent—up three points since February—followed by Amable Aristy Castro of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) with six per cent, and Pedro Candelier of the Popular Alliance Party (PAP) with one per cent.
In the May 2004 presidential election, Fernández received 57.11 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Hipólito Mejía of the PRD and Eduardo Estrella of the PRSC. Fernández had previously served as the Dominican Republic’s head of state from 1996 to 2000.
Yesterday, Candelier argued that the Dominican Republic is in disarray, adding, "Governments here work for their own benefit. (...) We must make all public servants accountable to the public, so we can know how the people’s money has been spent."
The presidential election is scheduled for May 16. A candidate requires more than 50 per cent of the vote to be elected in the first round.
