Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Labour First, Conservatives Gain in Norway
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Norway’s governing Labour Party (DNA) remains on top of the country’s political scene, according to a poll by Norsk Respons published in Aftenposten. 28.8 per cent of respondents would vote for Labour in the next legislative election, down 2.9 points since April.
The opposition Progress Party (FrP) is second with 24.8 per cent, followed by the Conservatives (H) with 19 per cent, the Socialist Left (SV) with seven per cent, the Liberal Left (V) also with seven per cent, the Christian People (KrF) with 6.8 per cent, and the Agrarians (Sp) with 4.7 per cent.
In September 2005, Norwegian voters renewed the Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament). Final results gave the Red-Green alliance—encompassing Labour, the Socialist Left and the Agrarians—87 seats in the 169-member legislative branch. Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg—who held the highest office from March 2000 to October 2001—took over as prime minister for the second time.
In this survey, the level of support for the governing parties stands at 40.5 per cent, while the two main opposition forces—Progress and the Conservatives—reach 43.8 per cent.
On May 8, Agrarians leader Aslaug Haga expressed disappointment with some of the coalition government’s policies, saying, "The message from the parliamentary group is that we must find solutions that are reasonably good for farmers while at the same time keeping our election promises to voters for additional local government funding."
