Fernández Still Ahead in Dominican Republic
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in the Dominican Republic are planning to vote for the incumbent in this month’s presidential election, according to a poll by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates. 56 per cent of respondents would back Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in the ballot, unchanged since March.
Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) is second with 37 per cent—up five points since March—followed by Amable Aristy Castro of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) with five per cent.
In the May 2004 presidential election, Fernández received 57.11 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Hipólito Mejía of the PRD and Eduardo Estrella of the PRSC. Fernández had previously served as the Dominican Republic’s head of state from 1996 to 2000.
On May 1, Vargas accused the current government of poor economic management, saying, "The re-election candidate should explain why he didn’t take measures to prevent price increases of food and medicine, which could’ve been avoided by lowering taxes on fuels, supporting farm production with funds and not ballooning the public expenditure, which has pressed additional prices increases."
The presidential election is scheduled for May 16. A candidate requires more than 50 per cent of the vote to be elected in the first round.
