(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama remains ahead of Republican John McCain in the United States, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 46 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator in this year’s presidential election, while 42 per cent would back the Arizona senator.

Support for Obama remained stable since late March, while backing for McCain fell by two points. In a separate match-up, McCain trails New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton by five points.

Yesterday, Obama expressed dismay at McCain’s assertion that Palestinian group Hamas would prefer to see Obama as the next president, saying, "I’ve said it’s a terrorist organization and we should not negotiate with them unless they recognize Israel, renounce violence, and unless they are willing to abide by previous accords between the Palestinians and the Israelis. So for him to toss out comments like that I think is an example of him losing his bearings as he pursues this nomination. We don’t need name calling in this debate."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
