McCain Edging Democrats in Texas
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain holds the upper hand against two prospective Democratic rivals in Texas, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. At least 48 per cent of respondents in the Lone Star State would vote for the Arizona senator in this year’s United States presidential election.
McCain holds a six-point lead over New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and a five-point advantage over Illinois senator Barack Obama.
In 2004, Republican George W. Bush—a former governor of Texas—carried the state’s 34 electoral votes, with 61 per cent of the vote. No Democrat has won the Lone Star State since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
