McCain Poised to Carry Home State in 2008
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain remains ahead in the Grand Canyon State, according to a poll by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University released by KAET-TV. At least 47 per cent of respondents in Arizona would vote for their U.S. senator in head-to-head United States presidential contests against two prospective Democratic rivals.
McCain holds a 16-point lead over New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and a nine-point advantage over Illinois senator Barack Obama.
In 2004, Republican George W. Bush won the Grand Canyon State’s 10 electoral votes, with 55 per cent of the vote. Since 1972, the only Democrat who has carried Arizona in a presidential election is Bill Clinton in 1996.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
