McCain Clearly Favoured in Alabama

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain is the most popular United States presidential contender in the Yellowhammer State, according to a poll by the Capital Survey Research Center. 55 per cent of respondents in Alabama would vote for the Arizona senator in head-to-head contests against two prospective Democratic nominees.

McCain holds a 21-point lead over both New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Illinois senator Barack Obama.

In 2004, Republican George W. Bush won Alabama’s nine electoral votes, with 63 per cent of the vote. No Democrat has carried the Yellowhammer State since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
