Democratic Nominee Could Define Wisconsin

May 03, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama holds the upper hand in the Badger State, according to a poll by the University of Wisconsin. 47 per cent of respondents would back the Illinois senator in this year’s United States presidential election, while 43 per cent would vote for Republican Arizona senator John McCain.

In a separate contest, McCain holds a six-point lead over New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In 2004, Democratic nominee John Kerry carried Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes, with 50 per cent of the vote. No Republican has won the Badger State since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

U.S. president George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
