President Zelaya Improves in Honduras

February 28, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The popularity of Honduran president Manuel Zelaya has slightly increased since last year, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in La Prensa. 38 per cent of respondents think Zelaya has done a good or very good job in leading the country, up five points since September.

In November 2005, Zelaya—candidate of the Liberal Party (PL)—won the presidential election with 49.9 per cent of all cast ballots, defeating National Party (PN) nominee Porfirio Lobo Sosa. Less than 69,000 votes separated the two contenders. Zelaya took office in January 2006.

On Jan. 28, Zelaya announced that Honduras would join the Venezuela-led Petrocaribe initiative, saying, "I hope that we will have Venezuelan ships here carrying fuel oil within 60 days."

Petrocaribe was launched in 2005 by Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez as a regional energy security alliance. Venezuela sells oil to Caribbean nations with flexible credit terms and preferential prices.
