McCain Almost Tied with Hillary in U.S. Race
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - A 2008 United States presidential election featuring Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican John McCain could be very close, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 46 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in 2008, while 45 per cent would back the Arizona senator.
In addition, Rodham Clinton holds a four-point edge over former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, a nine-point advantage over actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson, and a 13-point lead over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
On Nov. 15, Rodham Clinton discussed the upcoming ballot, saying, "The American people know where I’ve stood for 35 years. This is going to be one of the most important elections we’ve ever had in our country’s history, and it is important that we have a candidate who is tested as a president who is ready to lead from day one."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
