Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Republicans 2008: Giuliani 33%, McCain at 17%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - A third of Republican Party supporters in the United States want Rudy Giuliani to become their presidential nominee next year, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 33 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 17 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 12 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee also with eight per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.
On Nov. 16, Tancredo defended a television spot that ties illegal immigration to terrorism, saying, "If my advertisement is ‘fear-mongering’ then Mothers Against Drunk Drivers should apologize for suggesting that drunken driving kills innocent people. So do open borders."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
