Democratic League Slides Before Kosovo Ballot
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The governing Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has dropped to second place, according to a poll by Index Kosova and BBSS Gallup International. 31 per cent of respondents would vote for the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) in this month’s election to the Assembly, up three points since August.
The LDK is second with 29 per cent—down eight points in two months—followed by the Alliance New Kosovo (AKR) with 16 per cent, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) with nine per cent, the Democratic League of Dardania (LDD) with eight per cent, and the Hour Party (ORA) with five per cent.
Kosovo was established as an independent part of Serbia under the protection of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In October 2004, the LDK won the Assembly election with 45.4 per cent of the vote and 47 lawmakers in the 100-seat legislative branch. The minority Serbs boycotted the ballot.
The remnants of the Yugoslav Federation had been transformed into Serbia and Montenegro in February 2003. In May 2006, Montenegro held a referendum on achieving its outright independence. The ballot passed by a small margin.
Last year, Kosovo prime minister Agim Ceku wrote a letter to the United Nations (UN) Security Council urging it to address the issue of separation promptly. Ceku wrote: "In 21st century Europe, there is a state with two million people, without a voice in the world. We demand you to hear us, without destructive postponements and half-measures, (and) show us the future."
On Nov. 4, UN-sponsored negotiations between leaders of Serbia and Kosovo on the future of the area resumed. They are supposed to end on Dec. 10.
On Nov. 1, Shpend Ahmeti, an analyst from the Group for Policy Analysis in Kosovo, said the area’s parties are pressed to propose new ideas at present, stating that the electorate has "had enough of promises about the status issue, they want something more concrete."
The Assembly election is scheduled for Nov. 17.
