(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton holds the upper hand against four prospective Republican rivals in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. At least 47 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in the 2008 United States presidential election.

Rodham Clinton holds a four-point lead over former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, a three-point edge over Arizona senator John McCain, a 12-point advantage over both actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

On Oct. 24, McCain discussed the Middle East, saying, "The rise of Iranian power and America’s renewed commitment to a resolution of the Israeli/Palestinian dispute gives us more in common with our Arab allies. (...) If, a decade from now, Iraq has a representative government that controls all its territory, has reconstituted its potentially-dynamic economy and has emerged as a constructive regional leader—that Iraq would balance Iranian power and influence its neighbours in the direction of liberal reform."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
