Arroyo Falls Below 35% Mark in the Philippines

September 28, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Few people in the Philippines are content with the performance of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, according to a poll by Social Weather Stations. 34 per cent of respondents approve of the way the president has handled her duties, down five points since June.

Arroyo took over as president in January 2001, following the resignation of Joseph Estrada. Arroyo won a six-year term in the June 2004 presidential election, garnering 39.99 per cent of all cast ballots.

In May, voters in the Philippines renewed the House of Representatives and one-half of the Senate. Final results gave seven of the 12 upper house seats at stake to Genuine Opposition (GO) candidates, followed by the pro-government Team Unity (TU) with three, and two independents.

On Sept. 25, Arroyo discussed her government’s successes, saying, "We have aimed high and have met the challenge: six years ago, no one thought we could get more revenues, cut down on tax cheats, strengthen the peso and move the stock market. And no one thought we could bring our budget into balance, as we did last month, prepay our debts and raise employment, but we have."
