Republicans 2008: Giuliani 30%, Thompson 27%

August 25, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani keeps a slight edge in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Harris Interactive. 30 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 27 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 14 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 11 per cent. Support is lower for former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas congressman Ron Paul, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, and Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel.

Yesterday, Romney criticized Democratic Party politicians who call for a universal health care system, saying, "A one-size-fits-all national health care system is bound to fail. It ignores the sharp difference between states and it relies on Washington bureaucracy to manage. I don't want the people who ran the Katrina clean-up to manage our health care system."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
