Hillary Trails Giuliani, Leads Thompson in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani holds a larger advantage against a prospective Democratic presidential nominee in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 47 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor, while 41 per cent of respondents would vote for New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Support for Giuliani in this match-up increased by one point since late July, while backing for Rodham Clinton fell by five points. In a separate contest, Rodham Clinton holds a three-point advantage over actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson.
On Aug. 17, Thompson said he would officially announce his intention to run for president soon, declaring, "We are going to be getting in if we get in, and of course, we are in the testing the waters phase. We're going to be making a statement shortly that will cure all of that. But yeah, we'll be in traditionally when people get in this race."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
