A Third of Americans Satisfied with Bush
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - George W. Bush maintains a low level of backing in the United States, according to four recent public opinion polls. In a survey by TNS released by the Washington Post and ABC News, 33 per cent of respondents approve of their president's performance.
Bush's approval rating stands at 33 per cent in a Financial Dynamics Diageo/Hotline study, 30 per cent in a poll by the New York Times and CBS News, and 25 per cent in a survey by American Research Group.
Bush—a Republican—earned a second four-year term in the November 2004 presidential election. The U.S. president's approval rating has not surpassed the 40 per cent mark in a national survey since December 2006.
In his Jul. 28 radio address, Bush urged the U.S. Congress to modernize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)—which requires the federal government to obtain warrants from a secret federal court in order to conduct domestic surveillance operations—saying, "Our intelligence community warns that under the current statute, we are missing a significant amount of foreign intelligence that we should be collecting to protect our country. Congress needs to act immediately to pass this bill, so that our national security professionals can close intelligence gaps and provide critical warning time for our country."
