More Trust for France’s Sarkozy and Fillon

July 15, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - France's main political leaders are enjoying increased popularity in the country, according to two public opinion polls. In a survey by CSA released by France Info, 65 per cent of respondents have confidence in French president Nicolas Sarkozy to face the country's current problems, and 56 per cent feel the same way about French prime minister François Fillon.

In a study by OpinionWay published in Metro, 64 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Sarkozy's performance, and 57 per cent feel the same way about Fillon.

In May, Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) candidate and former interior minister Sarkozy won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister.

On Jul. 10, during a visit to northern Africa, Sarkozy told an Algerian newspaper that France should not apologize for its colonial past, saying, "I am for a recognition of facts, not for repentance, which is a religious notion and has no place in state-to-state relations."
