Republicans 2008: Giuliani 27%, F. Thompson 19%

June 24, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is the most popular presidential hopeful for Republican Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by Princeton Survey Research Associates released by Newsweek. 27 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 19 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 15 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 12 per cent. Support is lower for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, Texas congressman Ron Paul, and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.

On Jun. 21, Paul was blocked from an upcoming political forum sponsored by Iowans for Tax Relief (ITR) and the Iowa Christian Alliance (ICA). ITR vice-president Ed Failor Jr. explained the decision, saying, "We invited credible Democratic and credible Republican candidates. (...) We had to draw the line somewhere." Paul's campaign chairman Kent Snyder described the choice as "weak."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
