Nevada Likes Romney, Hillary in 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Mitt Romney is the most popular United States presidential contender for Republican Party supporters in the Silver State, according to a poll by American Research Group. 23 per cent of respondents would vote for the former Massachusetts governor in the 2008 caucus.

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is second with 21 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain and actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 16 per cent each. Support is lower for former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich, former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Texas congressman Ron Paul, Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson.

In the sample of Democratic Party supporters, New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is first with 40 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards and Illinois senator Barack Obama with 16 per cent each. Support is lower New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, Delaware senator Joe Biden, Connecticut senator Chris Dodd, retired general Wesley Clark, and former Alaska senator Mike Gravel.

The Democratic presidential caucus in Nevada is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 19, 2008, after the Iowa caucus and before the New Hampshire primary. The Republican contest in the Silver State will take place in late April.

In 2004, Massachusetts senator John Kerry won the Democratic Nevada caucus with 63 per cent of the local delegates, followed by former Vermont governor Howard Dean with 17 per cent, Edwards with 10 per cent, Kucinich with seven per cent, and reverend Al Sharpton with one per cent.

George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
