Obama Ahead of Three Republicans in U.S. Race
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama is the most popular 2008 presidential contender in the United States, according to a poll by Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times. At least 46 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator in head-to-head contests against three prospective Republican nominees.
Obama holds a five-point edge over former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, a 12-point advantage over Arizona senator John McCain, and a 16-point lead over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
In other contests, former North Carolina senator John Edwards leads Giuliani and Romney, but trails McCain. New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton trails the three Republicans.
On Jun. 15, McCain discussed immigration reform in Alabama, declaring, "We have to act to secure the border and account for these 12 million people who are here in this country illegally. I support the president of the United States in trying to come up with a resolution to this issue and I think we have a good proposal."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
