Republicans 2008: Giuliani 27%, McCain at 19%

June 13, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for Rudy Giuliani dropped in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 27 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a primary, down eight points since March.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 19 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 17 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 10 per cent. Support is lower for former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

Yesterday, McCain expressed hope in the ratification of the Senate's proposed immigration reform, saying, "If you call anything short of rounding up 12 million people and deporting them amnesty, then OK. But this proposal in my view in no way meets the definition of amnesty."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
