Republicans 2008: Giuliani 32%, McCain 19%

June 06, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the top spot in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by TNS released by the Washington Post and ABC News. 32 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a primary.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 19 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 11 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with nine per cent, and former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich also with nine per cent.

Support is lower for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore, California congressman Duncan Hunter, Texas congressman Ron Paul, Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson.

On Jun. 3, Gingrich expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration, saying, "The government is not functioning. It's not getting the job done. Republicans need to confront this reality. We have to have very relentless, dramatic change in American government."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
