Hillary Leads McCain, Ties Giuliani in U.S.

May 08, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton holds the upper hand against a prospective Republican presidential nominee in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 48 per cent of respondents would support the New York senator in 2008, while 44 per cent would vote for Arizona senator John McCain.

In a contest pitting Rodham Clinton against former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, the two candidates are tied with 45 per cent. In mid-March, Giuliani held an eight-point advantage over Rodham Clinton.

On May 6, Rodham Clinton discussed the war in Iraq, saying, "I think the president has enormous powers under our Constitution. He pushed those to the limit and beyond. It is his war; they are his mistakes, his misjudgements that have led us to this every difficult situation in which we find ourselves. I think you've got to balance everything in a very difficult situation. I have been long saying you shouldn't send anybody into any combat theatre unless they are fully equipped and fully trained."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
