Giuliani, McCain Could Carry Ohio

April 30, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in the Buckeye State would support Republican Rudy Giuliani in the 2008 United States presidential election, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 46 per cent of respondents in Ohio would vote for the former New York City mayor, while 41 per cent would back Democratic New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Giuliani also holds an eight-point lead over both Illinois senator Barack Obama and former U.S. vice-president Al Gore. In other match-ups, Arizona senator John McCain leads Rodham Clinton by two points, Obama by six points, and Gore by seven points. The three Democratic presidential hopefuls hold the upper hand in contests against actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson.

In 2004, Republican George W. Bush carried Ohio's 20 electoral votes, with 51 per cent of the vote. The Buckeye State has supported the eventual president in every U.S. election since 1964.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next United States presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
