Democrats 2008: Hillary 31%, Obama 26%

April 24, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Fewer Democratic Party supporters in the United States want Hillary Rodham Clinton to become their presidential nominee, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 31 per cent of respondents would support the New York senator in a 2008 primary, down seven points in 10 days.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 26 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 16 per cent, and former U.S. vice-president Al Gore with 15 per cent.

Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, reverend Al Sharpton, Delaware senator Joe Biden, retired general Wesley Clark, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, Connecticut senator Chris Dodd, and Alaska senator Mike Gravel.

On Apr. 21, Gravel discussed drug legislation, saying, "We are losing an entire generation of our young men and women to our jails and prisons. Drug addiction is a public health issue. Rather than incarceration, we must place a much greater emphasis on rehabilitation."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
