Republicans 2008: Giuliani 35%, McCain 16%

April 23, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is still the frontrunner in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 35 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 16 per cent, followed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 10 per cent, former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with nine per cent, and actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with eight per cent

Support is lower for former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

On Apr. 19, Tommy Thompson discussed gun control in the aftermath of a brutal incident at Virginia Tech University—where a student killed 32 people and himself—declaring, "Instead of pointing the finger at guns, what you have to do is point the finger at how do you spot individuals with mental problems, emotional problems that may go off and do a terrible thing like they did at Virginia Tech."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
