Republicans 2008: Giuliani Has 13-Point Lead
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is still the frontrunner in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by SRBI Public Affairs released by Time. 35 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 22 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 12 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 11 per cent. Support is lower for Kansas senator Sam Brownback, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, and former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore.
On Mar. 28, Gilmore criticized the way the Democrats in Congress have dealt with the war in Iraq, saying, "How do you send troops out into the streets now with a gun and a helmet, men and women, and ask them to stand up for their country and then say by the way, on March of next year we're pulling out."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
