Republicans 2008: Giuliani 44%, McCain 21%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Support for Rudy Giuliani increased markedly in the race for the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nomination, according to a poll by TNS released by the Washington Post and ABC News. 44 per cent of GOP supporters would vote for the former New York City mayor in a United States primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 21 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 15 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with two per cent. Support is lower for former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former New York governor George Pataki, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Texas congressman Ron Paul, and Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel.
Yesterday, Huckabee urged conservative voters to support him, saying, ""We can't afford to elect people who simply reflect a culture and reflect a common view, but don't necessarily believe it."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
