KESK Leads, Greens Now Third in Estonia

February 12, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Support for the Estonian Centre Party (KESK) increased in the Baltic nation, according to a poll by TNS Emor. 20 per cent of respondents would vote for the KESK in next month's legislative election, while 18 per cent would back the Estonian Reform Party (ER).

The Estonian Greens (EER) are third with 11 per cent, followed by the Union of Fatherland and Res Publica (IRPL) with nine per cent, the Social Democratic Party (SDE) with four per cent, and the Estonian People's Union (ERL) with two per cent. The next election is scheduled for Mar. 4.

In March 2005, prime minister Juhan Parts—a member of Res Publica—announced his resignation. In April, a new administration—headed by Reform leader Andrus Ansip—was sworn in. The governing coalition also includes the KESK and the ERL. Since 1991, only one of the Baltic nation's administrations has lasted more than two years. Estonia joined the European Union (EU) in May 2004.

In September 2006, the Russian government announced it was revoking its signature from a May 2005 border agreement with Estonia, citing discrepancies dating back to 1920. On Feb. 6, Ansip discussed the situation, declaring, "Of course, we would like relations between our countries to be more accurate and clear, which is why I advocate border treaties. But they have to be ratified by the Russian side."
