Two-Thirds of Americans Oppose Iraq Plan

January 25, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in the United States disagree with George W. Bush's recent proposal for the coalition effort, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 67 per cent of respondents oppose sending more troops to Iraq.

The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein's regime was launched in March 2003. At least 3,062 American soldiers have died during the military operation, and more than 22,900 troops have been wounded in action.

In December 2005, Iraqi voters renewed their National Assembly. In May 2006, Shiite United Iraqi Alliance member Nouri al-Maliki officially took over as prime minister.

On Jan. 10, U.S. president George W. Bush introduced his new course of action for the coalition effort, which includes an increase in U.S. troop levels. 52 per cent of respondents think the Bush administration has a plan on how to handle the situation in Iraq, but only 34 per cent feel the same way about the Democrats in Congress.

Yesterday, the Senate foreign relations committee voted 12-9 to express opposition to Bush's plan. Democratic Delaware senator Joe Biden said the resolution—which could go to the Senate floor next week—seeks "to save the president from making a significant mistake."
