North Carolina Reviews Presidential Bids

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani and Newt Gingrich are the most popular United States presidential contenders for Republican Party backers in the Tar Heel State, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling. 30 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in the 2008 primary, while 29 per cent would back the former House of Representatives speaker.

Arizona senator John McCain is third with 22 per cent, followed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with six per cent. 13 per cent of respondents would vote for someone else.

In the sample of Democratic Party supporters, former North Carolina senator John Edwards is first with 29 per cent, followed by New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton with 16 per cent, and Illinois senator Barack Obama with 15 per cent. 40 per cent of respondents would not support any of these three politicians.

The Democratic and Republican presidential primaries in North Carolina are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 5, 2008. In 2004, Edwards won the Democratic North Carolina primary with 52 per cent of the vote, followed by Massachusetts senator John Kerry with 27 per cent, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich with 12 per cent, former Vermont governor Howard Dean with six per cent, and reverend Al Sharpton with three per cent.

Incumbent president George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next United States presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
