Correa Defeats Sports Figures in Ecuador
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - President-elect Rafael Correa was the most important Ecuadorian in 2006, according to a poll by Cedatos/Gallup. 21.6 per cent of respondents named Correa as the person of the year.
Correa, a former finance minister, ran for president as an independent leftist under the Alliance Country (AP) banner. On Nov. 26, Correa defeated Álvaro Noboa of the Institutional Renewal Party of National Action (PRIAN) in a run-off with 56.69 per cent of the vote. He will officially take over as Ecuador's president on Jan. 15, 2007.
Jefferson Pérez was second with 7.4 per cent, followed by Edison Méndez with 6.6 per cent. Pérez became Ecuador's first Olympic gold medallist in the Atlanta 1996 games, when he won the 20 km speed walking competition. In May, he finished second in the world championship, which took place in Spain.
Méndez, who plays professional soccer at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, was the recipient of an award this year for his "outstanding" performance during the 2006 World Cup, where the Ecuadorian national team reached the second round.
