South Carolina Voters Back Dean

December 28, 2003

(CPOD) Dec. 28, 2003 - Former Vermont governor Howard Dean is the top Democrat in South Carolina, according to a poll by American Research Group. 16 per cent of respondents would support Dean in the state's primary, a four per cent lead over retired general Wesley Clark and reverend Al Sharpton.

North Carolina senator John Edwards --who has spent an estimated $600,000 U.S. in campaign ads currently airing in South Carolina, Iowa and New Hampshire-- is the only other candidate with more than 10 per cent. The South Carolina Democratic primary will take place on Feb. 3, 2004.

George W. Bush won South Carolina's eight electoral votes in 2000, with 57 per cent of all cast ballots. No Democrat has carried the state since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
