Kansas Governor: Sebelius 57%, Barnett 40%
- Kathleen Sebelius is holding on to the lead in the Sunflower State's gubernatorial election, according to the latest poll by SurveyUSA. 57 per cent of respondents in Kansas would support the Democrat incumbent, while 40 per cent would vote for Republican Jim Barnett.
A late October survey by Rasmussen Reports gave Sebelius a 22-point edge over Barnett. Libertarian Carl Kramer and Reform Party candidate Richard Ranzau are also contending.
Sebelius has acted as Kansas' governor since January 2003. The former state representative defeated Republican Tim Shallenburger in the 2002 election, with 53 per cent of all cast ballots. Sebelius had previously served as a state representative and as Kansas' insurance commissioner.
Barnett has served as a state senator since 2000. On Aug. 1, he defeated six challengers in the GOP primary with 36 per cent of the vote.
The gubernatorial election in the Sunflower State will take place today. Since 1939, Kansas has had 12 Republican and five Democratic heads of government.
