Half of Spaniards Satisfied with Zapatero

September 06, 2006

- Support for José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero dropped last month in Spain, according to a poll by Instituto Opina released by Cadena Ser. 49.9 per cent of respondents approve of the president's performance, down 4.2 points since late June.

Zapatero—of the Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE)—was sworn in as president of the government in April 2004, following his party's victory in the legislative ballot. The conservative Popular Party (PP) had administered the government under José María Aznar since 1996.

Support also dropped for current PP leader Mariano Rajoy. 30.5 per cent of respondents approve of the opposition leader's performance, down 2.5 points in two months.

This summer, 19 different forest fires were reported in Galicia. On Sept. 3, Zapatero praised the work of state broadcaster TVE in covering the event, saying, "The right used to tell us (through TVE) that Galicia's beaches were splendorous during the Prestige oil spill, when in reality, they were full of chemicals."
