Fox Remains Above 60% Mark in Mexico
- Many Mexicans remain satisfied with the performance of their president, according to two recent public opinion polls. 66 per cent of respondents to a survey by Reforma approve of Vicente Fox's performance, up two points since May.
A study by Consulta Mitofsky found that 60.6 per cent of respondents agree with the way the president is governing the country, down 1.1 points in three months.
Fox—of the National Action Party (PAN)—ended 71 years of uninterrupted rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the 2000 election, winning a six-year term with 42.5 per cent of the vote. The president was affected by setbacks in getting a series of reform proposals through Congress.
Mexican voters chose their new president on Jul. 2. On Jul. 6, official results placed PAN candidate Felipe Calderón as the winner with 35.88 per cent of all cast ballots, followed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) with 35.31 per cent.
On Sept. 1, Fox was unable to deliver his sixth and final State of the Country address, after dozens of PRD lawmakers took control of the stage of Congress to protest the outcome of the Jul. 2 election. The president presented a written copy to the legislative branch.
In a televised statement, Fox declared: "This attitude goes against democratic practices and freedoms, and does not represent an affront to me, but to the presidency as such, and above all, to the people of Mexico."
