Rhode Island Gov.: Carcieri 50%, Fogarty 42%

November 06, 2006

- Don Carcieri could earn a new term in Rhode Island's gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. 50 per cent of respondents in the Ocean State would vote for the Republican incumbent, while 42 per cent would support Democratic challenger Charles Fogarty.

A mid-October survey by Rhode Island College gave Carcieri a 14-point lead over Fogarty.

Carcieri—a Republican—was elected in November 2002, defeating Democrat challenger Myrth York with 55 per cent of the vote. Carcieri took over in January 2003 from fellow GOP member Lincoln Almond.

Fogarty is the current lieutenant governor, and had previously served as a state senator and director of the Rhode Island Small Business Administration.

The gubernatorial election in the Ocean State is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1951, Rhode Island has had five Republican and seven Democratic heads of government.
