Vermont U.S. Senate: Sanders 57%, Tarrant 36%

October 31, 2006

- Bernard Sanders could become one of Vermont's representatives to the United States Senate, according to the latest poll by Research 2000. 57 per cent of respondents in the Green Mountain State would vote for the independent candidate, while 36 per cent would support Republican Richard Tarrant.

A mid-September poll by American Research Group gave Sanders a 15-point edge over Tarrant. Pete Diamondstone of the Liberty Union Party is also contending.

Sanders has been Vermont's at-large member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991. After independent U.S. senator Jim Jeffords announced his retirement from the upper house, Sanders launched his bid for the Senate seat. The independent candidate has been endorsed by several Democrats, including Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Howard Dean and Senate minority leader Harry Reid.

Tarrant is the co-founder of information technology company IDX Systems. He defeated former Air Force colonel Greg Parke and marijuana legalization activist Cris Ericson in the Sept. 12 Republican primary.

The senatorial election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
