Texas U.S. Senate: Hutchison 61%, Radnofsky 27%
- Kay Bailey Hutchison could earn a new six-year term as one of the Lone Star State's representatives to the United States Senate, according to the latest poll by Zogby International. 61 per cent of respondents in Texas would support the Republican incumbent, while 27 per cent would vote for Democratic challenger Barbara Ann Radnofsky.
A late October survey by Rasmussen Reports gave Hutchison a 26-point edge over Radnofsky.
Hutchison was first elected to the U.S. Senate in a June 1993 special election, and earned six-year terms in 1994 and 2000. In the last election, she defeated Democrat Gene Kelly with 65 per cent of all cast ballots. Hutchison was mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate, but decided to seek a third term in the U.S. Senate instead.
On Apr. 11, Radnofsky defeated Kelly in the Democratic run-off with 60 per cent of all cast ballots. Radnofsky, an attorney and mediator, is the first Texas woman to receive the Democratic Party's U.S. Senate nomination.
The election is scheduled for Nov. 7. No Texas Democrat has served in the U.S. Senate since Robert Charles Krueger in 1993.
