New York Governor: Spitzer 69%, Faso 24%

November 04, 2006

- Democrat Eliot Spitzer could become the new governor of New York, according to the latest poll by the Siena Research Institute. 69 per cent of respondents in the Empire State would vote for Spitzer, while 24 per cent would support Republican John Faso.

A mid-October survey by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion released by WNBC gave Spitzer a 48-point advantage over Faso. Green Party candidate Malachy McCourt and Libertarian John Clifton are also contending.

Republican George Pataki has acted as New York's governor since January 1995. He was re-elected in 1998 with 54 per cent of the vote, and in 2002 with 49 per cent, defeating Democrat Carl McCall and independent candidate Tom Golisano. In July 2005, Pataki ruled out seeking a new term in office.

Spitzer has served as New York's attorney general since 1998. He will face Nassau County executive Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary on Sept. 12.

Faso was the minority leader of the New York Assembly from 1998 to 2002. Two-time candidate Golisano and former Massachusetts governor William Weld—who were mentioned as possible rivals for Spitzer—announced earlier this year that they would not seek the governorship.

The gubernatorial election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1943, New York has had four Republican and three Democratic heads of government.
