Maryland Governor: O’Malley 50%, Ehrlich 47%

November 07, 2006

- Martin O'Malley is the top contender in the Old Line State's gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by SurveyUSA. 50 per cent of respondents in Maryland would vote for the Democratic challenger, while 47 per cent would support Republican incumbent Robert Ehrlich.

An early November poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. had O'Malley and Ehrlich tied with 45 per cent. Green Party candidate Ed Boyd and Populist Party candidate Chris Driscoll are also contending.

O'Malley has served as mayor of Baltimore—Maryland's most populous city—since 1999. He was expected to face Montgomery County executive Doug Duncan in the Democratic primary, but Duncan withdrew from the race in June.

Ehrlich won the November 2002 election over Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend with 51 per cent of the vote. Ehrlich is the first Republican to head Maryland's government in more than three decades.

The gubernatorial election in the Old Line State will take place today. Since 1951, Maryland has had three Republican and six Democratic heads of government.
