Minnesota Governor: Hatch 45%, Pawlenty 39%

November 02, 2006

- Mike Hatch could become the next governor of the North Star State, according to the latest poll by the University of Minnesota. 45 per cent of respondents would support the Democratic challenger, while 39 per cent would vote for incumbent Republican Tim Pawlenty.

In addition, nine per cent of respondents would vote for Peter Hutchinson of the Independence Party. Ken Pentel of the Green Party is also contending. A late October survey by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. gave Hatch a two-point edge over Pawlenty.

Pawlenty has acted as Minnesota's governor since January 2003. The former majority leader of the Minnesota House of Representatives defeated Democrat Roger Moe and independent Tim Penny in the November 2002 election with 44 per cent of the vote.

Hatch has served as Minnesota's attorney general since 1998. He had previously worked as the state's commissioner of commerce from 1981 to 1989.

Since 1951, the North Star State has had six Republican and five Democratic heads of government, plus Jesse Ventura who campaigned as a Reform candidate.
