VMRO-DPMNE Leads in Macedonian Ballot
- The opposition Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization - Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) is the top political organization for voters in the former Yugoslav republic, according to a poll by the Institute for Democracy. 29.4 per cent of respondents would support the VMRO-DPMNE in tomorrow's legislative ballot.
The governing Social Democratic League of Macedonia (SDSM) is second with 21.9 per cent, followed by two ethnic Albanian parties: the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) with 16.4 per cent, and the Democratic Party of Albanians (PDSH) with 9.9 per cent. 42.2 per cent of respondents remain undecided.
The VMRO-DPMNE—currently led by Nikola Gurevski—governed from 1998 to 2002. SDSM leader Vlado Buckovski took over as prime minister in December 2004, following the resignation of Hari Kostov over disputes in the coalition government, which also included the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the BDI.
Yesterday, Macedonian president Branko Crvenkovski urged voters to refrain from violence during the election, saying, "We must not allow anyone's ambitions to be more important than the interests and future of Macedonia."
